An Essential Caravan Checklist For Your Next Trip

CRVSC-Blog-An-Essential-Caravan-Checklist.jpg

When you're setting off on a caravanning adventure, it's tempting to pack everything you might need, and with so many ‘must-haves’, space fills up fast. However, it's essential to consider your vehicle's load limit/towing capacity—overpacking can make towing harder and increase fuel consumption.

But having the right essentials on board can be the key to a safe, smooth trip. It's a delicate balance between being prepared and being overloaded! To help you find that balance, here is an essential caravan checklist for your next adventure, including arrival and departure considerations and a comprehensive list of packing basics.

Caravan checklists - Things to consider

Everyone has their own idea of what caravans ‘essentials’ are, so choosing items that enhance your safety, comfort and enjoyment is essential. A few key factors can help guide your packing decisions:

  • Location: Will you be close to home comforts or heading off-road or even off-grid? Remote travel means you'll need to be more self-sufficient.
  • Duration: The longer you're away, the more essentials you'll likely need to stay safe and comfortable. Functionality is key!
  • Space: How much room do you have in your caravan? If space is minimal, there are lots of clever space-saving solutions available at the click of a mouse.
  • Frequency: Are you caravanning for just a few days or heading off for weeks at a time? If the latter, your travelling needs may vary and need a bit more time to think through.
  • Longevity: Do you want your gear to last for years, or are you looking for short-term solutions? Investing in quality caravan essentials and accessories can be 100% worth it in the long run.

Caravan departure checklist

Before you hit the road, a quick pre-departure check can make all the difference. Before you leave, ensure:

  • Roof hatches (and the pop-top if your vehicle has one) are closed and locked.
  • Windows, cupboards and drawers are closed and locked.
  • All power, lights, hot water and pump switches are turned off.
  • Smoke and gas detectors have been tested.
  • The fire extinguisher pressure gauge and expiry date have been checked.
  • The TV and antenna are down and secure.
  • Loose heavy gear and provisions are securely placed in low cupboards and over or slightly forward of the vehicle's axle.
  • The awning is retracted and locked.
  • Gas bottles are closed.
  • Electric cords have been unplugged.
  • The mains water pressure hose has been disconnected.
  • The sullage hose or bucket has been removed.
  • The corner stabilisers are up and secure.
  • The van, leads, chains and mirrors are hooked up.
  • Safety lights and the fridge switch have been checked.
  • Eternal doors and storage lockers are secure.
  • Tyre pressure and tread on both your caravan and tow vehicle have been checked.
  • Mechanical or electric brakes (and brake lights) are working.
  • Freshwater levels have been checked, and the cassette toilet has been emptied.
  • Your van weight levels are within safe limits.
  • You drive safely and are mindful of the surrounding conditions.

Caravan arrival checklist

When you arrive at your destination:

  • Check that your chosen site is level with no ant nests, overhead branches, etc.
  • Take your time parking and consistently check your mirrors for safety.
  • Ensure your caravan is level using ramps and wheel chocks if required.
  • Disconnect leads and chains between your van and your towing vehicle.
  • Clamp the jockey wheel firmly in position.
  • Level your van lengthways and drop down the stabiliser legs.
  • Connect your 15-amp power lead or generator.
  • Turn on your gas bottle.
  • Turn on your fridge.
  • Run your water pump, then your hot tap.
  • Turn your gas/240V switch on your hot water system.
  • Check water levels and connect the sullage hose.
  • Erect the exterior awning/annexe if your vehicle has one.

Caravan packing checklists

Safety essentials

Camping and caravanning come with its share of risks, especially when you're far from help. Make sure these critical items are on your caravan checklist:

  • First-aid kit: Essential for treating minor injuries or stabilising someone until help arrives.
  • Fire extinguisher: A must-have in case of a fire in or around your caravan.
  • Emergency communication devices: Mobile coverage can be unreliable in remote areas, so it's vital to have backup options. Consider carrying a satellite phone (which offers coverage virtually anywhere in Australia), a UHF radio (ideal for vehicle-to-vehicle and long-range communication), and an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, which transmits a distress signal to emergency services and is intended for life-threatening situations only).

Cooking essentials

Planning your meals in advance—and prepping any that can be safely stored—will help you pack the right cooking gear and avoid surprises on the road.

Cookware

  • Utensils like an egg flip, long tongs, wooden spoon, ladle, etc.
  • Pots and pans of various sizes
  • Can opener and a lighter/matches
  • Paper towels for cleaning and to use as napkins.

Crockery & cutlery

  • Take one set of everything for each person and wash up after each meal.
  • Collapsible crockery and cookware can be flattened to save space.
  • Durable materials like melamine and plastic are virtually unbreakable.
  • Biodegradable crockery is relatively sturdy and good for the environment.
  • Insulated water bottles

Stove

Separate portable stove or BBQ you can cook on outside, plus gas bottles to power these.

Food

No caravan trip is complete without enjoying some great meals along the way. Here are some suggestions:

  • Non-perishable pantry staples: Canned goods (soups, beans, vegetables, tuna, etc.), pasta, rice, and grains, dried fruits and nuts, energy bars, popcorn, rice cakes, and chips, crackers and biscuits, cereal and muesli bars, instant noodles or pre-packaged meals, condiments (tomato sauce, mustard, mayonnaise, etc.), and cooking oil and spices.
  • Refrigerated items: Fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, meat, yoghurt or yogurt drinks, dip, butter or spreads, and eggs.
  • Drinks: Bottled water, soft drinks, tea bags and instant coffee.

Power & lighting essentials

When it comes to caravan essentials, here are some powerful tools (literally) that will boost your comfort on the road.

  • Lighting: You have various options for caravan lighting to suit your needs. Your generator or rechargeable battery packs can power area lights like lanterns, strip lights, and LEDs. For personal lighting, torches and headlamps are perfect when you need hands-free illumination while moving around.
  • Power: At powered campsites, you're all set. But if you're off the grid, you may need additional power sources, like a generator for reliable electricity, solar panels to convert sunlight into power, a second battery to keep your devices running without draining your car battery, power inverters to plug various devices into your car/caravan battery, and portable power packs to charge multiple devices at once.

Personal essentials

To keep everyone happy and comfortable during your trip, here are some must-haves:

  • Entertainment: Like iPads, DVDs, board games, books, puzzles, cards, and magazines for downtime.
  • Towels: At least two per person (one for showering and one for swimming).
  • Umbrella/raincoats: Be ready for unpredictable weather so it doesn't ruin your day.
  • Summer clothing: Pack sunscreen, hats, swimwear, rashies, sunglasses, lightweight clothing, and comfortable footwear.
  • Winter clothing: Layered, insulative clothing, beanies, gloves, jackets, and sturdy footwear for colder conditions.
  • Bedding: Lightweight bedding for warmer months and thermal sleeping bags or extra blankets for winter.
